COMMON QUESTIONS

How do I know if discernment is right for me?

The first step is an initial conversation.

This conversation is an opportunity to clarify your situation, ask questions, and determine whether discernment work is appropriate. There is no obligation to proceed.

What if I’m already functioning well?

Many clients are outwardly successful and capable, yet inwardly unsettled. Discernment work is especially suited for people who are high functioning but sense that something important requires attention before moving forward.

Is this therapy or counseling?

No.

Oak & Owl does not provide therapy, counseling, or mental health treatment. The practice of discernment does not involve diagnosis, clinical intervention, or crisis support.

Discernment focuses on judgment, values, responsibility, and decision-making at life or vocational inflection points. When a situation calls for therapeutic or clinical care, that is named directly.

Do you tell clients what they should do?

No.

Oak & Owl does not offer advice about what you “should” choose. The role of the guide is not to decide for you, but to help you see clearly enough to decide well for yourself.

Do I need to know exactly what my question is before starting?

No.

Many clients arrive with a sense that “something needs attention,” but without clarity about what kind of decision they are facing. Clarifying the real question is often the first and most important part of the work.

How long does discernment take?

The 3 session Discernment Intensive pathway is available when the initial task is to clarify what kind of decision is being asked of you. Discernment Engagement unfolds over 12 weeks to allow time for reflection, testing, and integration.

What if I’m in crisis or experiencing significant emotional distress?

Oak & Owl is not equipped to provide crisis or clinical support.

If you are experiencing acute distress, mental health symptoms, or are in immediate crisis, it is important to seek appropriate clinical care. In such cases, discernment work may become appropriate later, once stability is established.

Are sessions held in person?

All sessions are currently held virtually.

This allows Oak & Owl to work with clients across the United States and internationally while maintaining flexible scheduling.

Do you accept insurance?

No.

Oak & Owl operates on a private-pay basis. The work is not medical or clinical in nature and is therefore not eligible for insurance reimbursement. Some clients may be able to use HSA or FSA funds, depending on their plan.
